Treadmill or Elliptical Placement

Finding a good spot to keep your treadmill or elliptical is important. You want it to be in a clean, level area that is easily accessible, while not in the way. Since we can’t all have a home gym, we have to decide which room makes the most sense for us.

The living room is a good area, especially if you can use your favorite television show as a motivator during exercise. It becomes easier to think of exercise as a fun activity, rather than a chore, when you pair it with activities you find enjoyable. One downside to this location is lack of privacy. Some people feel more comfortable with their exercise when no one is watching them. Unless you live alone, chances are you won’t be able to use your treadmill or elliptical in the living room without at least catching a passing glance. Also, if you have children, you should be careful about keeping your fitness equipment in an area that is easily accessible to them. Your child may not understand how the controls work and crank up the speed too quickly. Also, treadmills and ellipticals are meant to be used by people of a certain height. Allowing a child to have contact with these devices could result in harm to the equipment or the child.

The bedroom is another option. This one works well because it allows you privacy during your workout, and it can be useful as a motivation factor as well. It’s hard to come up with an excuse to skip your morning workout when your treadmill or elliptical is mere feet away from your bed. It also ensures that if you have children, they won’t have access to your fitness equipment. Just be sure to avoid using it to hang laundry. It’s a common tale that treadmill users throw a shirt or two over the treadmill, and it quickly turns from a piece of fitness equipment to a piece of laundry equipment. You don’t want that to happen. You bought it as an investment in your health, and it should be used to that end.

It’s also tempting to put your treadmill or elliptical in the garage or on a patio. These areas also allow for privacy, and keep fitness equipment out of the way. Unfortunately, they expose the equipment to more dirt and humidity. This can lead to corrosion and premature failure of parts.

Wherever you decided to put your fitness equipment, it’s a good idea to get a treadmill mat. A mat will help to keep dirt out of your treadmill or elliptical, which can significantly extend it’s life.
