Proform Smart Strider Elliptical Review

The Proform Smart Strider is our Best Buy 2014 Winner in the $400 to $699 category. To put it simply, it's the best elliptical for beginners. At $599, you get what you pay for - a machine of decent quality, great design, few features but poor customer service and support.

What we like most from this elliptical...

An amazing Space Saver folding design

This elliptical is very suitable for those who have small rooms. You can fold it for storage purposes and move it anywhere you want. If you are not using it, you can just fold it and store it away. An ideal space saver!

A multi-user machine

This machine gives you an option to adjust its stride from 16" to 18" and 20" which is very good for variety. So your family or friends can use it with no problem. In addition, you can get better results since you can target certain muscle areas by adjusting the strides for various workouts.

Rock-solid oversized traction controlled pedals

Comfort-wise, this machine offers oversized pedals for your feet. Since you are simulating walking, jogging or running when using this machine, it is very important that the foot pedals are large enough so that you can place your feet in the most comfortable position when working out. In the Smart Strider's case, your feet will thank you.

The weaknesses

It rocks back and forth

Appears to be a high-end seesaw. The Proform Smart Strider doesn't have a lot of weight and support at the front to keep it down. It rocks back and forth terribly as if you're driving in a broken road. Just imagine a seesaw costing $599.

A little too noisy than others

This is one of those louder ellipticals you'll find. Most models make about the same amount of noise regardless of price, but this one is one of the few that isn't quite as quiet during operation. If you want a model that makes less noise, you shouldn't have trouble finding it for a bit more.

Another $100 for an iFit subscription

Because of its price, we nearly missed on the iFit app compatibility offered by this machine. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with the package. You'll have to spend another $100 just to get the service, a real downer.

Comes with a lame warranty

The warranty on the Proform Smart Strider is bad. Parts and labor are covered for 1 year, while the frame is covered for life. We don't blame them for offering such poor coverage on this machine; this is the kind of coverage it deserves. We blame them for creating a machine they don't feel comfortable standing behind.

Verdict: The space saving feature aside, the Smart Strider is a very average elliptical. You'll get decent parts, great design, enough programs, and a pretty lacking customer service. If you are serious about a Proform we would recommend the 910 E. While more money, it gives you a lot more than you will get with the Smart Strider.
