Treadmill Motor Testing
DC motors can be tested easily in a number of ways. Many times a motor is replaced only to find another problem exists, so be sure to test the motor before you assume it is the cause.
Four Ways to Test a Treadmill Motor
- Cordless drill battery Get a fully charged 18-volt (preferred) cordless drill battery and, on most treadmills, connect the red and black motor leads to the battery. Some machines use different wire colors, but if you have two wires and hook them up backwards, the motor will simply run in reverse and will not be harmed. If the motor is good, it should run at roughly 1 MPH.
- Car battery These are 12-volt DC high-amp batteries, so the motor turns slowly but you can walk on the belt. Always be careful with battery acid — we do not recommend bringing a car battery into the house. Take the treadmill to the battery instead.
- Lantern battery A fully charged lantern battery should run your motor at a slow speed, but it lacks the amperage for anyone to walk on the belt.
- External DC converter with variable speed input The most complex method, but also the best way to test a motor. If you have a way to do this, it is the preferred approach and the method we use in the field on local service calls.
