Brief Overview
If you are looking for a Schwinn elliptical we would recommend the 450 before we would buy the 431.
Overall Quality
This machine has a terrible maintenance reputation. Just expect to have to do multiple repairs to it while you own it. Otherwise we would look to Sole, NordicTrack, Proform or Horizon in the same price range. The Schwinn 431 is an unreliable elliptical. The $699 price tag isn't bad, but you'll end up spending a lot more on repairs. If you save up an extra $100, you can get the 450, which is a significant improvement. Still, we'd suggest looking at other brands in this price range. Schwinn just doesn't make machines that compete. Ergonomically speaking, this model is bad. Even at such a cheap price point, you can find plenty of ellipticals that offer a much more natural range of motion. The lack of adjustability is awful. The stride length is fixed at 18". You have to hope this works well with your body type because there is no way to adjust it. There are, however, 16 levels of resistance that allow you to align your workouts with your fitness levels. Out of all the ellipticals we reviewed, none offer less options for adjustments. As far as projected reliability is concerned, this machine is extremely disappointing. It has a reputation for needing multiple repairs, and its life expectancy is well below other ellipticals that sell for this little. The quality of parts used is also disappointing. The noise levels of this machine are slightly higher than average. Most ellipticals make about the same amount of noise, but those that sell for less than $1,000 are typically a bit louder. If quietness during operation is a major concern for you, you'll have to spend another $300 to find models that are better in this area. The warranty on the Schwinn 431 is bad. Wear items are covered for 6 months, electronics are covered for 1 year, parts are covered for 2 years, and the frame is covered for 15 years. It's not hard to find an elliptical with better coverage in this price range.
