Overall Quality
Nautilus, the company that produces Schwinn, has made considerable improvements but are not yet up to the standards of the other companies in the industry in terms of quality and customer service. The Schwinn 420 is one of Schwinn's worst models, which is really saying something. At $599, you can easily find better options. This is especially concerning since this elliptical is so cheap. It's really difficult to put together a machine worth buying that sells this low, and this one doesn't compare well to its competition in this price range. Ergonomically speaking, this model is disappointing. You can find several ellipticals that sell for this little offering a much more natural range of motion. The lack of adjustability is even worse. The stride length is fixed at 18". If your body type doesn't agree with this length, there's no way to change it. You do have 16 levels of resistance that give you some ability to align your workouts with your personal fitness levels, but very few of the ellipticals that we reviewed offer less options for adjustments. As far as projected reliability is concerned, this machine is pathetic. You'd have to knock $200-300 off the price of this elliptical for us to think the life expectancy was appropriate. The quality of parts used is also very low considering how much money you're asked to pay. The noise levels of this model are slightly higher than average. Most ellipticals make about the same amount of noise, but those that cost less than $1,000 are often a bit louder. If quietness during operation is a major concern for you, you'll have to spend another $400 to find a machine that is better in this area. The warranty on the Schwinn 420 is awful. Wear items and labor are covered for 90 days, mechanical and electrical are covered for 1 year, and the frame is covered for 5 years. There aren't many ellipticals that come with a warranty worse than this one.
