PACEMASTER ELLIPTICAL REVIEWS
General Information:These are built by Aerobics Inc. They have been building treadmills since the late 60's and have quite a tradition of making a spartan, high quality treadmill. Unfortunately, due to many of their dealers going out of business last year and a hedge fund owner that wanted their money back, Pacemaster had to go through a pre-packaged bankruptcy last year. They report that they are healthy with new ownership but the designs (other than a color change) are quite dated. The really positive news from Pacemaster is that they didn't dodge their obligations when they went through bankruptcy?they are honoring all the warranties from the time prior to the reorganization. They have always been a stand-up company and this is just more proof of it.
Manufacturing Philosophy:They have always trusted putting quality into the treadmill rather than trying to hit a lower selling price and that has served them well but with the influx of lower-priced, imported units Pacemaster has had to react with a new line of machines that have some cheaper components in them, but due to excellent engineering they are holding up well. Their industrial design could use some work but they don't put a high priority on making a great looking machine, just a great operating machine. The problem they are facing is a cash crunch when companies like NordicTrack are putting features on the machines that blow Pacemaster away function-wise.
Company Outlook : It will be interesting to see how Pacemaster fares trying to rebuild its dealer base. There are fewer and fewer dealers out there and the ones that are out there aren't too healthy. With the push by Sears and other mass merchants into Pacemaster's price range with more user friendly and better looking designs, it will be interesting to see if Pacemaster's quality can shine through or will they be another victim of the imports?
